Proposed Klamath dam removal legislation supports rural economies 11/10/11
Washington, DC – A Klamath Economic Restoration Act introduced today in the US Senate by Oregon Senator Jeff Merkley and in the House by California Congressman Mike Thompson deserves prompt Congressional action, said a growing group of bi-partisan supporters. A growing and diverse coalition representing tens of thousands of people including, ranchers, fishermen, Tribes, business owners, and conservationists say the Act’s collaborative solutions will end the ongoing water crises hurting Klamath communities that still have double digit unemployment figures.
Legal Victory for Klamath Riverkeeper: Judge Favors Salmon Protection in Northern California Rivers 4/25/11
A San Francisco Superior Court judge has ruled that a program allowing ranchers to divert water from the Shasta and Scott Rivers is illegal. The judge ruled the program, run by the California Department of Fish and Game (CDFG), failed to adequately consider the harm to protected coho salmon caused by diverting water for farm irrigation from both rivers to grow hay. The two rivers, both tributaries of the Klamath River, often run dry in summer months due to the water diversion. Both support dwindling populations of state and federally protected coho salmon.
CDFG report: Shasta coho face extinction 2/23/10
“With tributary irrigation season set to begin March 1st, we fully support CDFG and its partner agencies in acting swiftly to save the last of the Shasta coho. CDFG has provided great recommendations for improving instream flows and getting cattle out of the Shasta River – we hope they turn into tangible actions as soon as possible.”
Klamath Riverkeeper: Dam Removal Agreements are Best Path Forward 2/18/10
“Without setting and implementing tough clean water rules before dams are removed, we may see 10 more years of toxic algae and dead salmon on the Klamath, and we’re not sure Klamath salmon can survive that. PacifiCorp must be held accountable for their pollution before the dams are removed.”
Klamath Riverkeeper supports dam deal, for now 1/07/10
"Our analysis shows the settlement is the most workable and realistic way to get the dams out, and poses an innovative way to deal with the historic over-allocation of water in the basin."
